1 Corinthians 10:13

13No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Summary

Temptations are common to humanity; God is faithful—He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear, and with the temptation He will provide the way of escape so you can endure.

Interpretation

1 Corinthians 10:13 arrives after sobering wilderness warnings. Israel’s privileges did not prevent idolatry, immorality, testing Christ, and grumbling—and many fell. Into that fear and that arrogance Paul speaks a promise: temptation is real, but it is not unique, and God is faithful in it.

“Common to man” punctures both despair and pride. You are not the only one facing this pressure; your struggle is not a private curse that proves God has abandoned you. Neither are you so exceptional that ordinary obedience and ordinary means of grace somehow do not apply.

God’s faithfulness is the center. He does not pledge a temptation-free life; He pledges sovereign care within temptation. “Not beyond what you are able” is not flattery of your strength; it is confidence in the God who matches the trial with sufficient help—and who knows your frame.

The “way of escape” is not always removal of the circumstance; it is provision “that you may be able to endure it.” Escape can mean a door out, a pause, a friend’s counsel, a Scripture remembered, a refusal spoken, or power to stay faithful inside the heat. God’s goal is enduring holiness, not pampered ease.

Read beside 10:12—“let him who thinks he stands take heed”—this verse balances vigilance and assurance. Overconfidence falls; terrified hearts need a faithful God. The same chapter that says flee idolatry also says God makes a way.

Pastoral takeaway: when temptation feels unprecedented, name it as common, then look for God’s exit and endurance helps—prayer, Scripture, accountable community, flight from triggering contexts (see also 6:18; 10:14). Do not negotiate with sin while quoting this verse as a magic shield for lingering near evil.

Thank God for His faithfulness today. Ask Him to show the way of escape in your present pressure. Take the next obedient step He provides—often ordinary, sometimes costly, always possible by His care. Let this word dwell richly in you: the church belongs to Christ, love never fails, and labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Share this promise with someone who feels trapped. Pair it with the warnings of 10:1–12 so hope does not become presumption. God’s faithfulness trains runners; it does not sponsor spiritual carelessness. Let this word dwell richly in you: the church belongs to Christ, love never fails, and labor in the Lord is not in vain.
