The content of God’s witness is gift: “eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” Life is located in a Person, not in a technique. Teach this unit so hearers meet both comfort and command; the gospel always does both.
Possessing the Son is possessing life; lacking the Son is lacking life. The binary is pastoral clarity for a confused church, not cruelty. Measure success not by novelty but by whether faith, hope, and love grow more durable under pressure.
“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” Purpose statement: assurance for believers. Knowing is intended. Linger on the verbs and nouns the Spirit inspired; they carry the pastoral weight that slogans cannot.
This unit is famous and rich because it offers clear assurance without thin theology—life in the Son, received by believers in His name, knowable by design of the letter. Trace how this paragraph serves the letter’s larger argument so you do not detach a favorite line from its neighbors.
John writes against both despair (“I can never know”) and presumption (“I have life without the Son”). Assurance is christological. Name the pressure your church faces that matches this text—delay, deception, lovelessness, pride, or fear—and answer it from the passage itself.
Pastorally, lead anxious believers to the Son, not to endless interior archaeology. Ask: do you trust the Son of God? Then receive John’s purpose—you may know you have eternal life. Refuse readings that flatters the flesh, softens Christ’s lordship, or turns grace into permission for darkness.
Churches should preach for knowing, not perpetual insecurity. The letter’s tests serve assurance, not the destruction of it. Put the main claim into a single sentence you could pray with a child or a skeptic without embarrassment.
Memorize 5:11-13. Eternal life is God’s gift in the Son; have the Son, have life; John wrote so believing people may know. Rest there, then love. Return to the wording of the text until its promise and demand both land on the conscience. Seek the Lord until comfort and conviction both do their work. Seek the Lord until comfort and conviction both do their work. Seek the Lord until comfort and conviction both do their work. Seek the Lord until comfort and conviction both do their work. Seek the Lord until comfort and conviction both do their work. Seek the Lord until comfort and conviction both do their work.
