1 Peter 2:1-6

1 Peter 2:1 is part of this passage.
1Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking, 2as newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow, 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4Come to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious. 5You also as living stones are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”

Summary

Putting away malice and deceit, believers must crave pure spiritual milk, come to Christ the living stone, and be built as living stones into a spiritual house and holy priesthood offering sacrifices acceptable through Jesus.

Interpretation

“Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking” is the negative side of new-birth love. These vices shred community. Growth requires detox from relational toxins that contradict the enduring word.

“As newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow.” Desire is commanded: cultivate craving for undiluted word. Milk here is not forever immaturity but nourishment for growth, conditioned on having “tasted that the Lord is gracious.”

Taste leads to coming: “Come to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.” Jesus is the cornerstone who is alive. Human rejection and divine choice collide at Christ—Peter’s own story and the church’s.

Believers “as living stones are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Temple and priesthood language now describe the whole people, not a clerical caste. Worship is life offered through Jesus.

Scripture’s promise stands: God lays in Zion a chosen cornerstone; “He who believes in him will not be disappointed.” Trust in Christ will not finally shame the believer. Practice: put away one named vice, open Scripture with hunger, and offer one “spiritual sacrifice” of praise, mercy, or obedience today through Jesus.

Coming to the living stone is continual, not a one-time aisle walk. Rejected by people yet chosen by God, Jesus remains the only foundation that will not disappoint believers. Keep coming when culture’s builders discard Him.

Spiritual sacrifices include praise, mercy, bodies offered in obedience, and prayers rising through Jesus. You are not spectators in someone else’s temple; you are living stones and priests. Crave the milk that grows you into that vocation.

Receive this passage as pastoral medicine: pray it aloud, share it with one fellow exile, and take one obedient step the same day so interpretation becomes discipleship rather than information alone.

Context

Continues from the enduring word (1:22-25) into craving milk and temple identity.

Living stone imagery introduces honor for believers and stumbling for the disobedient (2:7-8).

Priesthood language prepares the climactic identity of 2:9-10.

Audience

Christians who need detox from relational sin and renewed hunger for Christ and His word
