1 Timothy 5:19-22

1 Timothy 5:19 is part of this passage.
19Don’t receive an accusation against an elder except at the word of two or three witnesses. 20Those who sin, reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear. 21I command you in the sight of God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the chosen angels, that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. 22Lay hands hastily on no one. Don’t be a participant in other people’s sins. Keep yourself pure.

Summary

Do not admit a charge against an elder except on two or three witnesses; publicly rebuke persistent sinners so others fear; keep these rules without prejudice or partiality; do not lay hands hastily, and do not share in others’ sins—keep yourself pure.

Interpretation

Elders need protection from frivolous accusation: require two or three witnesses. Leadership draws criticism; due process is justice. Timothy must not be naive, nor a magnet for gossip-as-evidence. Return again to the plain sense of the verses and obey the next clear duty you see.

Yet elders are not untouchable: “Those who sin, reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.” Proven sin meets public rebuke for the church’s holy fear. Protection and accountability are twins. Share the burden of this text with your church so interpretation becomes shared discipleship.

Paul intensifies with oath-like solemnity before God, Christ Jesus, and elect angels: keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. Favoritism in discipline destroys trust. Equal scales honor God who watches. Christ Jesus our hope remains the center; without Him every command collapses into pressure.

“Lay hands hastily on no one” warns against quick ordination. Sharing in others’ sins happens when we endorse the unfit. “Keep yourself pure” personalizes the charge—Timothy’s integrity is bound to his appointing decisions. Let love for God’s household make your application concrete before the week ends.

Build processes that are slow to accuse, brave to correct, impartial in judgment, and cautious in commissioning. Refuse delay: the Spirit who inspired this charge still applies it to real congregations now.

Practice: refuse single-source elder gossip; pray before ordination decisions; and examine partiality in how your community treats leaders’ failures.

Protect elders from frivolous accusation and the church from untouchable leaders. Two or three witnesses, public rebuke of proven sin, and impartial process are love with a spine. Slow laying on of hands is preventive medicine. Favoritism—shielding celebrities or targeting outsiders—invites the displeasure of the God, Christ, and angels before whom Paul charges Timothy.
