1 Timothy 6:3-5

1 Timothy 6:3 is part of this passage.
3If anyone teaches a different doctrine and doesn’t consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, 4he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions, 5constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.

Summary

Anyone who teaches different doctrine and rejects sound words of Christ and godliness is conceited and ignorant, craving controversy and verbal fights that produce envy, strife, blasphemies, evil suspicions, and constant friction among corrupted minds who think godliness is a means of gain.

Interpretation

Paul returns to the letter’s opening conflict. Different doctrine that will not consent to “sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness” is exposed as pride: “he is conceited, knowing nothing.” Certainty without submission to Christ’s words is ignorance wearing swagger. Return again to the plain sense of the verses and obey the next clear duty you see.

The craving is for “questions and disputes of words.” Argument itself becomes the product. Fruit follows: envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction. Bad doctrine rots community psychology. Share the burden of this text with your church so interpretation becomes shared discipleship.

Corrupted minds deprived of the truth imagine “that godliness is a means of gain.” Religion as monetized hustle is ancient. When teaching serves profit more than godliness, the mask slips. Christ Jesus our hope remains the center; without Him every command collapses into pressure.

Timothy must recognize the pattern early: reject Christ’s sound words, inflate ego, weaponize debate, monetize piety. Withdraw energy from that game. Let love for God’s household make your application concrete before the week ends.

Churches today should measure teaching by Jesus’ words and godliness—not by controversy metrics or revenue. Refuse delay: the Spirit who inspired this charge still applies it to real congregations now.

Practice: exit one fruitless dispute; test teachers by whether they produce suspicions or love; and refuse any spirituality that treats godliness primarily as a revenue stream.

Starve controversy engines. Measure teachers by Jesus’ sound words and by godliness’ fruit—not by dispute metrics or revenue. Evil suspicions and constant friction are not a harvest to envy. When godliness is sold as gain, walk away even if the platform looks impressive; conceit that knows nothing still markets itself as depth.
