2 Thessalonians 1:5-10

2 Thessalonians 1:5 is part of this passage.
5This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of God’s Kingdom, for which you also suffer. 6For it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, 7and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, 8punishing those who don’t know God, and to those who don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus, 9who will pay the penalty: eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10when he comes in that day to be glorified in his saints and to be admired among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

Summary

Their endurance is a sign of God’s righteous judgment toward kingdom worthiness; God will justly repay afflicters and give relief when the Lord Jesus is revealed with angels in flaming fire to punish unbelief and to be glorified and admired in all who believed.

Interpretation

Paul interprets their suffering: “This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of God’s Kingdom, for which you also suffer.” Affliction is not evidence that God has abandoned them. It is bound up with His just verdict and with being counted worthy of the kingdom they suffer for. Worthiness here is gift-aligned fitness, not self-earned ticket.

“For it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us.” Justice has two sides: repayment for oppressors and relief (rest) for the oppressed. Paul includes himself (“with us”)—apostles and church share the same hope of vindication. Timing is not immediate revenge but the revelation of Jesus.

Relief comes “when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire.” The parousia is public, heavenly, angelic, and fiery. This is not a private spiritual mood but cosmic unveiling. Those who “don’t know God” and “don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus” face punishment. Ignorance of God and refusal of the gospel are paired as liability.

The penalty is sobering: “eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” Separation from the Lord’s presence and glory is the essence of the judgment. Paul does not soften final accountability. The same day that destroys the impenitent glorifies Christ in His people.

“When he comes in that day to be glorified in his saints and to be admired among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.” The coming is Christ-centered celebration among believers. Faith in the apostolic testimony is the hinge. Admiration of Jesus in His people answers the shame of present persecution.

Pastorally, hold relief and judgment together without gloating. Comfort the afflicted with coming rest; warn the hard-hearted with coming justice; and keep the spotlight on Jesus glorified in His saints. Do not promise that every earthly court will fix it this week—promise that the Lord will be revealed.

Practice: pray 1:7-10 over someone suffering injustice; refuse bitterness by handing repayment to God; and ask whether your life will make Christ admired among believers when He comes—or only argue for temporary ease.

Context

Extends the thanksgiving: perseverance under persecution (1:3-4) becomes theological evidence of God’s righteous judgment.

Introduces the letter’s eschatological frame—revelation of Jesus, judgment, and glory—before the corrections of chapter 2.

“Eternal destruction from the face of the Lord” stresses relational exclusion from His presence as the core of judgment.

Audience

Persecuted believers tempted to think God is unjust or absent, and listeners who need warning about rejecting the gospel
