Ezekiel 22:23-29

Ezekiel 22:23 is part of this passage.
23The LORD’s word came to me, saying, 24“Son of man, tell her, ‘You are a land that is not cleansed nor rained on in the day of indignation.’ 25There is a conspiracy of her prophets within it, like a roaring lion ravening the prey. They have devoured souls. They take treasure and precious things. They have made many widows within it. 26Her priests have done violence to my law and have profaned my holy things. They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths. So I am profaned among them. 27Her princes within it are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain. 28Her prophets have plastered for them with whitewash, seeing false visions, and divining lies to them, saying, ‘The Lord GOD says,’ when the LORD has not spoken. 29The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery. Yes, they have troubled the poor and needy, and have oppressed the foreigner wrongfully.

Summary

This passage presents the city’s bloodguilt and shows how the LORD addresses his people, the nations, and restoration.

Interpretation

In Ezekiel 22:23-29, Ezekiel develops the city’s bloodguilt. The images of saying, cleansed, rained belong to a sustained prophetic message, not an isolated puzzle. The prophet addresses displaced people who must learn that the LORD’s presence and authority are not confined to a familiar building or political center. Vision, sign, oracle, and enacted symbol ask whether the people will hear and turn.

Historically, Ezekiel repeatedly rejects religious appearance without obedience, while promising that God can gather, cleanse, and renew a remnant. Ezekiel interprets Judah’s collapse as the consequence of idolatry, violence, corrupt leadership, and contempt for holiness. Yet judgment is not proof that Babylon is ultimate. The LORD judges his people and the nations, preserves a remnant, and acts for his name so that people know who truly rules history.

The passage joins divine transcendence with moral nearness. God’s glory is overwhelming, but it is not detached from the vulnerable, exiled, or practical shape of communal life. Ezekiel rejects religious appearance without obedience. Worship, leadership, land, economics, and treatment of neighbors reveal whether a people honors the holy God it invokes.

Within the book’s larger movement, severe judgment prepares for purification and new creation. The promise is not a return to unchanged patterns. God must give a new heart, gather the scattered, restore just shepherding, and make his Spirit active among the people. Symbolism should awaken discernment and hope rather than invite date-setting detached from repentance.

For readers today, the city’s bloodguilt calls for reverent attention and concrete faithfulness. Test impressive claims against God’s word, grieve what profanes life, and refuse leaders who feed themselves while neglecting the flock. Receive warning without despair: the LORD can meet people in exile, cleanse what is defiled, and create a community whose life makes his holy presence visible.

This passage remains a call to faithful attention: receive its warning, practice its hope, and let its vision shape patient service, courageous prayer, and compassionate care for neighbors.
