Genesis 14:1-12

Genesis 14:1 is part of this passage.
1In the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar; Arioch, king of Ellasar; Chedorlaomer, king of Elam; and Tidal, king of Goiim, 2they made war with Bera, king of Sodom; Birsha, king of Gomorrah; Shinab, king of Admah; Shemeber, king of Zeboiim; and the king of Bela (also called Zoar). 3All these joined together in the valley of Siddim (also called the Salt Sea). 4They served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and struck the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim, 6and the Horites in their Mount Seir, to El Paran, which is by the wilderness. 7They returned, and came to En Mishpat (also called Kadesh), and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that lived in Hazazon Tamar. 8The king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar) went out; and they set the battle in array against them in the valley of Siddim 9against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five. 10Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and some fell there. Those who remained fled to the hills. 11They took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went their way. 12They took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who lived in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Interpretation

In Genesis 14:1-12, In the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar; Arioch, king of Ellasar; Chedorlaomer, king of Elam; and Tidal, king of Goiim, they made war with Bera, king of Sodom; Birsha, king of… The narrator wants us to see God’s ways in real human history. Listen to the text: “In the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar; Arioch, king of Ellasar; Chedorlaomer, king of Elam; and Tidal, king of Goiim, they made war with Bera, king of Sodom; Birsha, king of Gomorrah; Shinab, king of Admah;…”

Sodom and similar scenes warn that injustice and corruption invite God’s holy response. Yet remembrance of Abraham and rescue of Lot show mercy woven through judgment for the sake of promise.

Abram rescues Lot from kings, meets Melchizedek who blesses God Most High, and refuses Sodom’s wealth so God alone gets the glory. In the Abraham cycle, God calls one family so that blessing might reach all families of the earth. This passage belongs in that movement: Genesis 14:1-12 is not an isolated anecdote but a step in God’s unfolding purpose. Read Genesis as Christian Scripture: creation, fall, and promise find their yes in Jesus Christ, the Seed and true Image.

A pastoral word for today: Hate injustice, flee compromise, and thank God that mercy still opens doors of escape.

Hold honesty and hope together. Genesis never flatters its heroes, yet never abandons the promise. That combination is good news for imperfect households learning to follow the God of Abraham. Keep Genesis 14:1-12 inside that larger mercy.

Handle the moral weight of Genesis 14:1-12 with humility. Scripture records sin to warn and to magnify grace, not to entertain. Let conviction lead to Christ, who bears curse and brings the blessing promised to Abraham.

As you sit with Genesis 14:1-12, ask what it shows you about the God who creates, calls, and keeps covenant. Genesis is not mere ancient family lore; it is living Scripture that forms faith, repentance, and hope. Let the text steady your trust in the LORD’s faithful character.
