Summary

After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being one hundred ten years old. Choose this day whom you will serve; as for me and my house—the LORD.

In Joshua 24:29-33, After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being one hundred ten years old The narrator wants us to see the covenant God who keeps His oath to the fathers and now acts through Joshua’s Word-shaped leadership. Listen to the text: “After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being one hundred ten years old. Exclusive service of the LORD answers remembered grace; households must put away rival gods. Choice is urgent, public, and costly under a holy God.

Shechem covenant renewal: Joshua rehearses salvation history and summons, “Choose this day whom you will serve”—as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. In Shechem covenant, history, choice, and service seal the book. This passage belongs in that movement: Joshua 24:29-33 is not an isolated scrap but a step in God’s purpose to give rest and form a serving people. Courage in Joshua is tethered to the Book of the Law and to the LORD who is with His people wherever they go.

A pastoral word for today: Put away one rival allegiance; speak your household’s service of the LORD.

Hold judgment and mercy, courage and Word together. Joshua never flatters presumption, yet never abandons the sworn promise. That combination is good news for imperfect churches learning holy courage. Keep Joshua 24:29-33 inside that larger faithfulness.

As you sit with Joshua 24:29-33, ask what it shows about the God who keeps promise and goes with His people. Joshua is living Scripture that forms courage, repentance, and hope—not a mere battle log. Let the text steady your confidence in the LORD’s faithful presence.

Reading Joshua 24:29-33 inside the whole book keeps commission and conquest, allotment and covenant together. Victory without obedience becomes presumption; inheritance without exclusive service becomes snare. Hold this passage in Joshua’s larger story that points toward Christ and true rest.
