Summary

Jesus begins the greatest commandment with the Shema: Hear, Israel—the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Interpretation

A scribe asks which commandment is first of all. Jesus begins not with a rule about behavior but with Israel’s confession: “Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” Love for God rests on knowing who God is—the one true Lord.

By citing the Shema (Deuteronomy 6), Jesus roots His answer in the heart of Scripture. He is not inventing a new religion against Israel’s faith; He is fulfilling and clarifying it. The God who is one claims exclusive loyalty.

In Mark’s temple controversies, this moment stands out for its warmth. Jesus and the scribe draw near to common ground in God’s word. Yet the surrounding chapters show that confessing one Lord must finally mean recognizing Jesus’ authority as well.

For disciples, the Shema guards us from fragmented loves. Career, family, nation, and self all press for worship. Jesus recalls us to the first truth: there is one Lord.

Pastoral takeaway: start ethics with theology. Before asking what to do, hear again who God is—and let His oneness simplify a divided heart.

Return often to Mark 12:29. Mark wrote so that ordinary believers could meet Jesus with clarity and respond in faith. Let the Holy Spirit apply this word—comforting the afflicted, correcting the proud, and strengthening those who follow the crucified and risen Lord.
