18Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Summary

The risen Jesus claims all authority and commissions disciples to make disciples of all nations, promising His presence to the end of the age.

Interpretation

On a mountain in Galilee—echoing other mountains of teaching and revelation—the risen Jesus comes near and speaks. His first word is authority: "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth." Mission does not begin with our competence; it begins with His cosmic lordship. The crucified King now holds heaven and earth.

Therefore the church is sent: "Go and make disciples of all nations." The scope matches Abraham's promise and Matthew's Magi—blessing for the nations. Disciple-making is more than collecting decisions; it is forming learners who belong to Jesus.

The means are clear: baptizing in the triune Name—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and teaching them to obey all that Jesus commanded. Identity (baptism) and instruction (obedience) belong together. Matthew's Gospel, filled with Jesus' teaching, becomes the curriculum of the nations.

The promise seals the commission: "Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Emmanuel at the beginning (1:23) is Emmanuel at the end. Presence is not a mood; it is the risen Lord's commitment to His people until history's close.

Some had doubted even while worshiping (28:17). Jesus still commissions a mixed band. Grace does not wait for perfect faith before sending. Authority and presence cover trembling obedience.

Pastoral takeaway: receive this as your King's word. Ask where "go," "baptize," and "teach" land in your life—through local witness, global partnership, hospitality, and patient formation of others in Jesus' commands.

When fear shrinks mission to comfort, remember "all authority" and "I am with you." The nations are not beyond His reach, and your weakness is not beyond His help.

Let Matthew end where it began: God with us in Jesus the Messiah. Worship, then go. The age will end; His presence will not fail His church. Measure your week by this mountain word. Where can you help someone take a next step as a learner of Jesus—through baptismal belonging, patient teaching, or simple presence that says the King is with us?
