Summary

Be strong and courageous; do not fear the nations, for the LORD your God goes with you—He will not fail you or forsake you.

Interpretation

Deuteronomy 31:6 speaks into transition fear. Moses will die; Joshua will lead; fortified nations remain. The command is double: be strong and courageous, and do not be afraid or terrified of them. Courage is not personality type; it is obedience grounded in God’s presence. The reason clause carries the weight: the LORD your God Himself is the One who goes with you.

“He will not fail you nor forsake you” anchors courage in God’s character. Fail and forsake are covenant-loyalty terms. Israel’s history of failure does not cancel God’s accompanying faithfulness. Hebrews 13:5 applies this promise to Christians tempted by greed and insecurity—contentment rests on “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Strength here is not self-help swagger. It is received resolve to enter hard obedience because God goes along. For Israel, that meant conquest under holy war limits. For the church, it means mission, holiness, and endurance under the Word—yet the same accompanying Lord (Matthew 28:20).

Pastoral use: speak this over people facing diagnosis, vocation change, leadership handoff, or cultural hostility. Name the fear; then name the God who goes. Pair with 31:8’s “goes before you” for full coverage—presence with and ahead.

Leaders especially need 31:6. Moses tells the people; soon he tells Joshua (31:7-8, 23). Courage is contagious when rooted in shared promise. Cowardice in shepherds spreads; so does faith.

Do not weaponize the verse to shame tender consciences. Fear is addressed, not mocked. God supplies reasons for courage rather than scolding alone. Also refuse presumption: God’s presence accompanies His mission, not every private ambition baptized with pious slogans.

Practice courage concretely: take the next faithful step you have delayed; encourage one person who is scared; rehearse aloud “He will not forsake you” when night thoughts accuse. Strength grows in use under promise.

Hold Deuteronomy 31:6 in the larger Torah close: the God who brought you out will bring you in. Be strong. Be courageous. He goes with you—and He does not fail. Hold fast to the LORD, and live what He has made near. Hold fast to the LORD, and live what He has made near. Hold fast to the LORD, and live what He has made near.
